The exhibition overall is more particularly an important venue for all of the works submitted, being a showcase of New Zealand artists. The annual Whanganui National Art Exhibition and Award aims to promote New Zealand artists and New Zealand contemporary arts, and to bring new arts experiences to Wanganui.
